Danae and the Golden Rain

What do you see? A painting with a complex plot: a naked lady, an old nursemaid, a dog, and some strange gold light falling from the sky. What's going on?
This painting by Titian, one of the greatest Renaissance artists, depicts Danae receiving the Golden Rain. And it is about sex.
One of the most famous plots in art history, representing sex in a very unusual way, is the story of Danae, a young and beautiful Argive princess.
Danae's father, the king, locked her in a bronze chamber so she would never have a relationship with a man. The king feared a prophecy that predicted his death at the hands of his daughter's son.
This story has one more king — the king of the gods, Zeus. He noticed beautiful Danae and fell in love with her. Did Titian depict Zeus in his painting? Try to guess!

Common questions

Romans treated sexual pleasure as something to celebrate rather than hide, so explicit frescoes and statues appeared in homes, bathhouses and gardens across Pompeii. The images marked fertility and good fortune, not obscenity, which is why 19th-century excavators found them everywhere once they began digging through the buried city.

Yes. Once 19th-century archaeologists uncovered Pompeii's frescoes and statues, museum staff in Naples locked the most explicit pieces in a secret room closed to the public. Only scholars and men willing to bribe their way in could see the collection, and it stayed largely hidden for over a century.

There's no fixed line, since art historians say the distinction depends on intent, context and technique rather than explicit content alone. A fresco or sculpture is usually called erotic art when it uses skill, symbolism or storytelling, while pornography is generally made purely to arouse, with no other artistic aim.

Many early cultures saw sex as tied to creation itself, so fertility and religion shaped how they depicted it. The Venus of Willendorf celebrated fertility through exaggerated curves, while Egyptian and Indian art connected sexual imagery to gods, temples and rituals meant to invite abundance rather than shame.
